Some things you need to know about getting a Library card

Registration is available to anyone who resides in Australia.

The National Library of Australia is a reference library not a lending library. Collection materials are only available to be used in the Library's reading rooms. We do not post items from the Library's collection to individuals.

Do you need a Library card?

You probably don't need one if...

  • ... you just want to search the Library's catalogue
  • ... the electronic resources you need are freely available over the Internet or available through your local public or State/Territory library

You might need one if...

  • ... you plan to come to the Library to use materials in our physical collection
  • ... you want remote access to licensed electronic resources that are accessible from offsite.

Have a look at eResources to see if the resource you want is available remotely

Don't forget to check your local public or State/Territory library as well to see what electronic resources they offer.

Accessing electronic resources

The National Library of Australia offers access to three types of electronic resources:

  • many are freely available and don't require a Library card to access
  • some are only available inside the National Library building
  • a selected number are available via the Internet to registered users

Have a look at the resources available through eResources to help you decide if you need to get a Library card

Library cards are valid for two years from the date of registration.
